Birds & Beasts, Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery, May 19 – June 13
Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery, 2435 Granville Street, on South Granville presents work by gallery artists featuring Anne Siems, Marnie Spencer, Caroline Weaver, Bennett Slater, Mohsen Khalili, Paul Morstad, Veronica Plewman and Brad Woodfin. Birds & Beasts explores the complex connections between creatures, humanity and their environments.
Birds and Beasts gathers the work of several artists who examine the tenuous and volatile connection between ourselves and the animal kingdom. Admiration, or even adoration, for the majesty of beasts finds a visual expression that is simultaneously inextricable from an intense primal horror. The presence of this ambivalence in the works creates a subtle yet powerful poetic beauty. The exhibiting artists are able to represent the desire to relate to another creature with its requisite terror of being rejected. Only the price of failure is more than hurt feelings, it is very real physical danger. This variation on a fundamental psychological dilemma is urgently honest, and its artistic manifestation is exquisite in its mysteriousness.
The exhibition will be on view at Jacana Contemporary Gallery on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 6pm and Sundays from 12pm to 5pm.
Opening Reception Thursday May 20th, 5pm to 8pm.
