Over the past few months we checked out new CMS accommodations at WordPress.com and liked the place so much, we decided to build a whole new home for ourselves and the neighbourhood.

We’re still moving in… so please excuse any mess and anything that is broken—we just couldn’t wait to open the door. It will take us a bit more time to unpack and put everything in its place. After 5+ years in our old online home, we’ve accumulated some things that we want to bring with us, but some of it needs a facelift or time to unpack and put back together. Pretty soon the place will be “all that and a bag of chips”, and then we’ll celebrate!

If you like what you see and want to leave a comment or two, we’d really like that. If you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear those too.

For now come on in and take a look around. Feel free to jump on the bed and put your feet on the sofa. We did!

Kurbatoff Art Gallery, 2427 Granville Street, on South Granville presents a solo exhibition of new works by Artist Chris Langstroth from September 23rd to October 7th, 2010. Chris Langstroth has been a full time artist for twenty years after graduating from Ontario College of Art, and later Ryerson University in Toronto, specializing in film and photography. He has participated in numerous solo, group and juried exhibitions, and has his works in many corporate and private collections. By using thick paint and knives to apply multiple wet layers or dig through existing layers, the artist often makes his work balance on the edge of abstraction and figuration. In each painting Chris is searching for the most compelling combination of imagery and abstract paint quality.

“The ongoing challenge in making pictures is to understand and control the effect produced by the interaction of abstract paint marks and the things being represented. The marks themselves tend to be difficult to control, but unpredictability keeps the process interesting, and the potential for new discoveries is always there.” —Chris Langstroth

Opening Reception
Saturday, September 25th, 2010
2-4 pm

“From a distance, Chris Langstroth’s works are stunning abstract paintings, but look closer and you’ll see distinct human shapes. By using thick paint and knives to apply multiple wet layers or dig through existing layers, he leaves evidence of his process in the finished product.” —Alison Malone, WHERE Magazine, 2007

This remarkable young woman died last March just before her 26th birthday, after a lifelong struggle with cystic fibrosis.

Eva Markvoort has gone, but her indomitable spirit will live on through an imaginative endeavour – 65 Red Roses Passion for Fashion: A Beautiful Legacy. There could be no better testimonial to her precious life than this collaboration between Edward Chapman Woman/Circa Ici, the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and dozens of Canadian artists.

Last May, 65 of Canada’s leading artists – including Robert Bateman, Robert Genn and Angela Au Hemphill – each contributed an eight by 10-inch wooden tile with the artist’s interpretation of a single red rose as a tribute to Eva. The tiles were then assembled into a marvellous bouquet of delicate, elegant, whimsical and quirky roses. This one-of-a-kind art project called 65 Red Roses has been donated by the Federation of Canadian Artists to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to use as a fundraising tool to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis. The painting is on display in the window of Chapman’s flagship store, 2596 Granville Street, and is available in poster format.

65 Roses is a child’s malapropism for cystic fibrosis. Red was Eva’s favourite colour and fashion was indeed her passion. “She was glamourous and gorgeous and a total fashionista,” says ECW/ CI buyer Nancy Lyall. “She could wear anything; she was really into retro stuff and she looked awesome in everything she wore,” says her mother Janet Brine. “She even dyed her hair bright fluorescent red.”

The threads of Eva’s story are woven through myriad other lives, not least of which is filmmakers Philip Lyall and Nimisha Mukerji’s award-winning documentary of her life up to 2007 entitled 65_Red Roses. They, along with many others who had crossed her path, were overwhelmed by her strength, courage and her sheer willpower in battling cystic fibrosis.

In her short life she worked valiantly to educate people about the disease, as well as organ donation, a subject she knew all too well, having survived for a short while after a double-lung transplant. She reached out to thousands of people across the world through her popular blog, 65_Red Roses.

Even in failing health she continued to raise money for the cause, just months before her death streaming a video from her bed, singing with friends to raise almost $6,000.

“A mark on the world, a difference, some proof that i had been here, something to say that i mattered, that when my body left this world my soul had made its imprint.” Eva Dien Brine Markvoort (1984 – 2010)

John Rea, President of ECW/CI, says his store is proud to be part of the 65 Red Roses Passion for Fashion project.

Edward Chapman WOMAN's Passion For Fashion, supporting the legacy of Eva Markvoort

“We are very dedicated in our commitment to support Eva Markvoort’s legacy. We want our customers to know just what an amazing and passionate person Eva was, and hope in our small way we can help ensure her wishes of continuing to build a longlasting, meaningful legacy will be met.”

Every customer who donates $65 or more will receive a $65 Red Roses coupon to redeem with a $300 purchase at any of three ECW/CI Lower Mainland stores. The funds raised through the 65 Red Roses Passion for Fashion initiative will further research and help find a cure for cystic fibrosis.

“We are very grateful to Edward Chapman Woman/Circa Ici for joining us in the fight against cystic fibrosis in honour of Eva. The funds raised will accelerate the research efforts in our quest to find a cure for cystic fibrosis,” says Martina Meckova, Director of the Lower Mainland Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Eva’s love and legacy will continue to live in our hearts forever.”

The new line has a more stylish, retro feel and is inspired by the 50′s and the 60′s lady-like glamour. Plum Designer Claudia Augusti believes that after a few seasons of women’s clothing being more relaxed and oversized, that women are looking forward to wearing things that are a little more fitted, that show off their shape a bit more, that are a bit more constructed.

For the photoshoot to launch the Fall 2010 Collection, Plum VP Ed des Roches wanted to tell a story along the lines of his favourite TV show, Mad Men. Stylist Tracey Pincott did a great job of helping to bring together the hip concept.

“Just because it may not be “back-to-school” for some of you out there, doesn’t mean you still can’t score some new pieces for your fall wardrobe. 9-5′ers can thank Canadian-based Plum Clothing, for pulling inspiration from the hit TV show, Mad Men for this season’s work-friendly seperates. From silhouette-celebrating skirts to stylish coats… ” -MJ from Around the Way

Johanna Ward of Shaw TV’s The Express was on hand to record some of the behind the scenes action from the photoshoot. Some of this footage has been published via YouTube for us to catch a glimpse of the fun. See these two clips from the Shaw TV broadcast.

Over the last 5 years she had lived in South Granville, Dana produced some glowing commentaries on all that is our South Granville neighbourhood.

Since July of this year, Dana and her family have moved to another part of town and we will miss her. So as a salute to Dana’s research, her great writing, and her love of this community, we wanted to recap some of her stories here for you.

My husband and I are about to embark on such a move. Along with our baby (born in March), we’re off to a little house (with a lawn! and a laundry room!) just east of Nanaimo St. Which means we’re saying goodbye to the neighbourhood we’ve loved for over five years. Read more

As July–and our moving date–approaches (I explain why we’re moving in Leaving South Granville, Part I), I’m getting more and more sentimental about our soon-to-be-old neighbourhood, Fairview / South Granville. One thing I’ll really miss: being so close to so many fabulous places to eat! So I thought I’d make my second post in this series about my favourite South Granville Restaurants. Read more

We finally finished moving the last of our things from our apartment at 14th and Granville (the heart of Fairview’s South Granville district), and this is my last post in my series on leaving our (now old) neighbourhood. It’s fitting for me to end this blog series with a post on the thing that first attracted me to South Granville: the shopping. From the Granville Bridge to 16th Avenue is some of the best shopping you’ll find in Vancouver. There are huge, big-brand stores for the home—including Pottery Barn Kids and Williams-Sonoma—but there are also loads of independent fashion and home boutiques with truly unique wares. Read more

We’ll miss you Dana, but please come back often and visit! We will always consider you an honorary resident!

What Lurks Behind?
Glamour! Intrigue! Suspense! A collaboration with the innovative Electric Company Theatre, the premiere of this stylish thriller is inspired by the “reel” history of the Stanley Theatre. Experience a multimedia spectacle featuring your favourite Hollywood film noir archetypes: the mob boss, the femme fatale, the hardboiled detective, and his girl Friday. Does the truth lie somewhere between the stage and the screen? Tear the Curtain! is set in a fictionalized 1930s Vancouver, where two prominent mob families: the Dugan’s (who run all the live joints) and the Pamploni’s (who own all the cinemas) use respectable businesses (like their cinemas and theatres) as a front for illegal activity. But what really happened in Vancouver in 1930? Read more on the Arts Club Theatre Company blog at Flashback! Vancouver, 1930.

After hundreds of thousands of dollars in studies, hours of meetings, it looks like we won’t have to think about Broadway Rapid Transit for the foreseeable future. At one point I equated it to planning a wedding without a groom. Bingo! Read more in this article by the Vancouver Sun…

Written by KELLY SINOSKI, Vancouver Sun, September 4, 2010

VANCOUVER — Metro Vancouver’s chief bureaucrat wants TransLink to bump a proposed rapid transit line to the University of B.C. to the bottom of its priority list and instead boost services in the fast-growing area south of the Fraser River.

Metro chief administrative officer Johnny Carline said Friday that Surrey will bear the brunt of the region’s growth in the next 30 years, and more transit is needed to help shape that city’s development.

The recommendation, included in Metro’s new 2040 Shape our Future draft regional growth strategy, suggests TransLink give priority to connecting Surrey city centre to other growth neighbourhoods following completion of the long-awaited Evergreen Line, which will link Port Moody, Coquitlam and Burnaby.

Only after Surrey gets improved transit should TransLink consider extending rapid transit along the Broadway corridor, the draft strategy says.

TransLink is preparing technical reports for both projects: a UBC rapid transit line and extending SkyTrain in Surrey to the Guildford area.

“We don’t think we’ll be able to afford full-scale investments in the Evergreen Line, south of the Fraser and UBC all in the life of this plan,” Carline told members of Metro’s regional planning committee Friday.

“We can’t afford to have investments going out to UBC that take away from investment in the major growth areas.”

Metro Vancouver is expected to be home to 3.4 million people by 2040 – a million more than now – with a third of the new residents expected to live in Surrey and White Rock, raising that area’s population to roughly the same as Vancouver’s.

Under the regional growth strategy, Metro is proposing to develop more “urban centres” with office, retail, community, culture and higher density housing to keep people living and working closer to home or along transit corridors.

Metro has been struggling for years to concentrate development in these centres, and to curb sprawl from extending into rural areas.

Surrey Coun. Judy Villeneuve said her city is in desperate need of more transit, especially as it’s set to become the second largest metropolitan region in the province. The city is developing its town centres to become more transit-dependent, she said, while also looking at alternatives such as light rail, heritage rail and more community buses.

Surrey city council will visit Portland in October to consider that city’s transportation system, Villeneuve said, and will lobby the federal government for more infrastructure funding.

“Our transit network is very poor,” she said, adding that Vancouver already has a better transit system than Surrey. “Vancouver is a place where you don’t need a car. Surrey is a place where you have to have a car.

“[Vancouver] may have to look at waiting [for transit] just like we have.”

Carline said he has no problem with TransLink investigating rapid transit lines for the Broadway-UBC corridor, but it wouldn’t be prudent to spend its limited pot of money in Vancouver when there is a bigger need in Surrey and other areas south of the Fraser.

“That’s where the region is changing the most and that’s where we need transit,” he said, adding: “It shouldn’t be put off. … If we put rapid transit in there, it would put a big impact on the development community on where it wants to go.”

Carline said it’s more difficult to retrofit a community for high-density transit hubs after it has been developed, particularly if a city has decided to turn swaths of cheap land into low-density, sprawling office parks.

The draft regional growth report – the fifth to be released since the 1960s – has been in the works since 2002. Besides developing more urban centres, it calls for protecting industrial land for manufacturing and processing to create jobs, as well as land for rural and conservation uses.

Carline said the report has been revised to make it more flexible for municipalities to make decisions around their urban centres and other neighbourhoods without having to seek approval from the regional district.

Metro Vancouver will receive comments on the draft strategy until Oct. 15 before going to a public hearing, likely in November. The plan must be adopted by all of Metro Vancouver’s 22 member municipalities, the Tsawwassen First Nation and TransLink.
